DIY Wooden Trout Net - Simple and Inexpensive, Follow as We Made One and Modified As Needed

Simple and Inexpensive

Below is a series of posts originally posted in October 2017. We were attempting to make a wooden trout net made with inexpensive material purchased from Home Depot.

The trout has done well for us over the years with a couple of modifications made to the netting. Initially, we used a plastic rubber lacing that worked but tended to stiffen as the Winter temps dropped to the 40s and lower.

Since then, we purchased a rubber net attached to the wood frame using zip ties. The zip ties had some rough edges that we made smooth using a kayak repair soldering iron.

Q&A: DIY Wooden Trout Net...! #flyfishing

Held a YouTube Q&A session to answer questions from Readers about the wooden trout net we are making. Intent was to build one that would be durable, did not tangle with fishing flies when landing a fish, and could be made cheaply without special tools...

DIY Wooden Trout Net is coming along! #diy #woodentroutnet

Net is coming along nicely. All that is left is the netting. Should be done well before the Trout Stocking Season! Recapping past posts are pics for reference:

DIY Wooden Trout Net is Done, and new Echo Ion Reel Arrived....! #flyfishing

Banner day today! Finished the DIY Wooden Trout Net well before the Winter Trout Stocking Season! Will be shifting to fly tying in preparation for the the trout stockings on the Blue River in Oklahoma in November!

Also, new Echo Ion Reel arrived in 10/12 weight, balances well with the Cabelas TLR Switch Rod in 8 weight! Fished it with Lee Wullf's Triangle Taper Ambush fly line in 350 grain... can get some great casts with minimal effort with it. Still have the two 6 weights at the ready for trout; will hope to target Stripers with the 8 weight... hopefully, at Denison Dam's tailrace!

Here is a video describing the DIY Wooden Trout Net. It's not perfect but was cheap to make, can hold at least 10 pounds with no issue, and no longer have to deal with fumbling around with the release since this one is magnetic versus a clip like our old one!

DIY Wooden Trout Net | Do Over Anyone?

Had some issues with the DIY Wooden Trout Net that I made several seasons back. In colder weather the lacing tended to become stiff and did not open up well. Sure enough the trout were able to jump out of the net and back into the water.

Decided to order a net from Amazon. Net arrived yesterday, and in short order and a few zip ties later, I have a net that will definitely hold a fish or two! Do check out the video, added pictures at the end of the "Do Over" variation of the original net. Plus added a snippet of the video from the original net.

Blue River Fishing Tips | Suggestions To Keep In Mind | #blueriverok

This round we answer the mail concerning suggestions for fishing the Blue River, Oklahoma... this includes using the soldering iron for repairing kayaks to smooth the zip ties!

Specifically, we talk about the walking stick, landing net and modifications to it, and then the fishing flies we used to get our first trout and first limit this season.

Plus we added snippets of the YouTube Shorts - https://youtu.be/cflUkqLfi-s, that showed the Stop and Go Retrieve, as well as some recent pictures others posted of some nice trout caught on the Blue!

Check it out and keep the suggestions in mind next trip!
